Purpose of Post
The Occupational Therapist will be responsible for the provision of a high quality person-centred Occupational Therapy service to a designated clinical area(s) and will carry out clinical, educational and administrative duties as assigned by the Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapy Manager.
Eligibility Criteria Qualifications & Experience

Candidates for appointment must:

  1. Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Occupational Therapists’ Register maintained by the Occupational Therapists Registration Board at CORU

And

  1. Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Occupational Therapists Register maintained by the Occupational Therapists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued.

And

  1. Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

And

  1. Have occupational therapy student placements and /or postgraduate occupational therapist experience in one or more of the following specialities: Older Person rehabilitation, Neuro/stroke rehabilitation, Respiratory rehabilitation.
  2. Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Professional/Clinical Responsibilities:

The Occupational Therapist will:

  • Implement the Occupational Therapy service in the designated clinical area(s) to which assigned. This may rotate as and when it is deemed appropriate.
  • Manage own caseload in accordance with prioritisation guidelines and the needs of the service.
  • Be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and review of treatment/intervention programmes for service users in accordance with Occupational Therapy standards.
  • Collaborate with service users, multidisciplinary team members, family, carers and outside agencies, as required, ensuring co-ordinated intervention.
  • Be responsible for goal setting in partnership with service users, multidisciplinary team members, family, and carers as required.
  • Plan discharge or transition of the service user between services as appropriate.
  • Document all assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, reports and discharge summaries in accordance with the requirements of the Occupational therapy department and professional standards.
  • Communicate verbally and/or in writing results of assessments, treatment/intervention programmes and recommendations to the service user and relevant others as appropriate.
  • Participate in teams as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members.
  • Foster and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues.
  • Attend ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings and care planning meetings as designated by Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapist Manager.
  • Arrange and carry out duties in a timely manner within settings appropriate to service users needs.
  • Maintain quality standards of practice and participate in quality assurance and clinical audit as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to documentation, consent, confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality in all matters of information obtained during the course of employment.
  • Seek advice and assistance from his/her Senior/manager with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his/her professional competence in line with the principles of best practice and clinical governance.
  • Operate within the scope of Irish Occupational Therapy practice and in accordance with local guidelines.
Education and Training:

The Occupational Therapist will:

Participate in mandatory training programmes.

  • Keep up to date with advances and developments in Occupational Therapy and demonstrate a commitment to professional development.
  • Participate in continuing professional development including, reflective practice, journal clubs, in-service training, attending and presenting at conferences/courses relevant to practice, promoting and contributing to research etc as agreed with the Occupational Therapy Manager.
  • Contribute to in-service training within the Occupational Therapy department and within the organisation as required.
  • Participate in support/professional supervision with Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapy Manager.
  • Engage in personal development planning and performance review with Occupational Therapy Manager/delegate.
  • Participate in the practice education of student occupational therapists and attend practice educator courses as appropriate.
  • Participate in the supervision and training of Occupational Therapy support staff.
Health and Safety:

The Occupational Therapist will:

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day security of the Occupational Therapy department and other work areas to which assigned, with particular awareness of fire regulations and security arrangements.
  • Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.
  • Implement agreed policies, procedures, and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Be aware of risk management issues, identifying risks and take appropriate action.
  • Document accurately and report any adverse incidents, near misses, hazards and accidents in accordance with organisational guidelines and bring them to the attention of the relevant person(s).
  • Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) standards as they apply to the role, for example, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections.
Administrative:

The Occupational Therapist will:

  • Keep up to date and maintain accurate statistics and other administrative records as required within the Occupational Therapy department.
  • Comply with department procedures with regard to assessment, recommendation and provision of all assistive equipment/custom made devices.
  • Participate in the establishment and maintenance of standards for quality improvement and adhere to existing standards and policies.
  • Assist in the organisation, maintenance and/or ordering of equipment and materials used in assessment and treatment ensuring an efficient system of stock control.
  • Contribute to the planning and development of the Occupational Therapy service and participate in service improvements.
  • Participate in quality initiatives, audits and outcome measurement of intervention as directed by the Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapy Manager.
  • Attend, participate or represent the OT department at meetings and events as may be required from time to time.
  • Engage in IT developments as they apply to service user and service administration.
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as assigned by the Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapy Manager.

Annual registration :
On appointment practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Occupational Therapists Register maintained by the Occupational Therapists Registration Board at CORU. AND Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)

Tenure :

The current vacancy available is a permanent post on a full-time basis.

The post is pensionable.  A panel may be created from which permanent or specified purpose vacancies of full or part time duration may be filled.  The tenure of these posts will be indicated at “expression of interest’ stage.

Appointment as an employee of Peamount Healthcare is governed by the Health Act 2004 and the Public Service Management (Recruitment and Appointment) Act 2004.

Remuneration :
Remuneration is in accordance with the salary scale approved by the Department of Health: Occupational Therapist Current salary scale with effect from 1st March 2023: €41,075 (point 1) to €59,360 (point 14 ).
Working Week :

The hours allocated to this post are 35 hours per week with 7 hours as a standard working day. The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of the Department Head and in accordance with the needs of the service.

HSE Circular 003-2009 “Matching Working Patterns to Service Needs (Extended Working Day/Week Arrangements); Framework for Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016” applies. Under the terms of this circular, all new entrants and staff appointed to promotional posts from Dec 16th, 2008, will be required to work agreed roster / on call arrangements as advised by their line manager. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8am-8pm over seven days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement (Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016

Probation   :

All employees will be subject to a probationary period as per the probation policy. This policy applies to all employees irrespective of the type of contract under which they have been employed. A period of 6 months’ probation will be served:

  • On commencement of employment.
  • Fixed term to permanent contract.
  • Permanent employees commencing in promotional posts will also undertake a probationary period relating to their new post.
Pension   :

Employees of Peamount Healthcare are required to be members of the Hospitals Superannuation Scheme. Deductions at the appropriate rate will be made from your salary payment.

If you are being rehired after drawing down a public service pension your attention is drawn to Section 52 of the Public Services Pension (Single and Other Provisions) Act 2012. The 2012 Act extends the principle of abatement to retired public servants in receipt of a public service pension who secure another public service appointment in any public service body.

Maternity   :
Maternity leave is granted in accordance with the terms of the Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2001.
Sick Leave :
Peamount Healthcare operates a Sickness Absence Management policy in line with the new Public Service Sick Leave Scheme as introduced in 31st March 2014.
Pre-Employment Health Assessment :
Prior to commencing in this role a person will be required to complete a form declaring their health status which is reviewed by the hospital’s Occupational Health Service and if required undergo a medical assessment with this department. Any person employed by Peamount Healthcare must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Validation of Qualifications & Experience :

Garda Vetting :

Hygiene in healthcare is defined as “the practice that serves to keep people and the environment clean and prevent infection. It involves preserving one’s health, preventing the spread of disease and recognizing, evaluating and controlling health hazards.”

  • It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure compliance with hospital hygiene standards, guidelines and practices.
  • Department heads/ managers have overall responsibility for best practice in hygiene in their area.
  • It is mandatory to complete hand hygiene training every 2-years and sharps awareness workshops yearly.
